Niger Gov Mohamed Bago’s convoy killed four FUTO students (and a director-general’s driver) on October 27, making it the second time his convoy would ruin lives and families in about two years in the state. But his Edo (then would-be) colleague (now) Gov. Monday Okpebholo’s convoy, in September 2023, notched up the student body count: five in a car travelling on the Auchi road. Same year, the Ebonyi Gov Francis Nwifurunor’s—or his son’s—entourage bumped off one student, Ebube Akah, on a bike.
Sometimes the killer convoys are those of government dignitaries. Ekiti’ s former First Lady Bisi Fayemi’s convoy particularly kicked up more dust in September 2019. Her motorcade security officers confronted some protesting FUOYE students, and two of the students somehow took the bullet.
In all the cases so far, except that of the first lady’s, nothing more happened. Like the October 27 accident, Bago’s media aides gave no press statement. Okpebholo and Nwifurunor didn’t give any either. Not even a statement of condolences—not to talk of investigation of the recklessness that usually leads to such deaths.
