Social media abandons man slammed in detention for calling gov funny name

Taraba Gov Kefas

Fonya Sule, a Taraban who kicked his heels in detention for one month (must have got bored), recently got bail, and might begin his legal ordeal (equally promising to be meh) over the Facebook smut he dished on Gov Agbu Kefas. He also gave the governor’s running mate Zainab Ibrahim the cheek.

The news is: while rusticating in detention, Sule got nobody to amplify his case on social media. Nor did any free-speech jingoists go shadow-punching for him.

The cold shoulder wasn’t because Sule committed murder. In fact, his lawyer Pius Damba said his client has yet to be proven guilty—of exercising his freedom of expression.

“Aunty Zee be very careful ooh,” Sule wrote on Facebook in September, according to court filings.   “…if not u will soon carry belle, that your boss na one time BuGu.”

The offence Sule committed was bailable, Damba, told a Jalingo federal high court last week. But the governor’s lawyers insisted Sule posted the crap to damage the reputation of the governor and Aunty Zee, citing sections 392 and 393 of Penal Code Law of Taraba, 1997.

And even up till now, the netizens seem too busy sharing more viral stuff to mind an itchy finger that landed its owner in hot water.

Really, Sule didn’t learn from those who have written themselves into the Nigerian Cybercrime Act 2024 hole.

Perennial presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was the most recent netizen to have tied himself up in a similar knot. None of all the tricks on the book has succeeded in stalling his defence of his 2025 X post calling President Bola Tinubu a ‘criminal’. And the DSS prosecuting the alleged defamation has remained hot on Sowore’s tail.
